Can people do more to support the homeless in their communities?
This week on The Deciders, Renee Fraser talks to a woman who says yes we can. She is Marilyn Wells, a philanthropist and an advocate for ending homelessness and she says if we all support new housing projects to provide shelter for the homeless we can combat the ‘not in my neighborhood’ thinking that prevents housing projects from being built.
She began by creating story telling events called ‘Stories from the Frontlines’ that feature people who have experienced homelessness and who talk about how gaining housing has changed their lives. Then she partnered these events with the United Way of Greater Los Angeles and together they have created a program called Everyone In. This program hopes to move the needle in gaining community support for much needed new housing. These events with real stories from the frontlines hope to break the myths and stereotypes about homeless people.
