Our guest this week, Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire, is president and co-founder of executive search firm Berkhemer-Clayton – placing high profile candidates in corporations (and non-profits) across the country. Betsy is also CEO of a national non-profit – 2020 Women on Boards, and spearheaded California legislature SBA26, which mandated that publicly traded companies in CA must include 1 woman on their board in 2019, two in 2020, and three in 2021. Lastly, Betsy is author of the books ‘The Board Game’ and ‘Winning the Board Game: How Women Corporate Directors Make the Difference’.
Betsy and Renee are co-hosts of the 2020 Women on Boards event, taking place at the Intercontinental Hotel in Los Angeles on November 22nd from 11:30am – 2pm. Sign up for the event at 2020wob.com. Tickets are $250 per seat.
2020 Women on Boards is a nationwide campaign (now global), educating women on how to get themselves onto, and how to strategically network, to be recommended for corporate boards. Research by both McKinsey and Credit Suisse shows that if women are on their boards – especially when there are at least three women – they are significantly more profitable and productive. We have seen a significant increase in the number of women on boards in the last year – from 17.7% nationwide to 20.4% of all the board seats in the Russell 3000.
When women are in the board room, the dialogue changes. Betsy recommends being seen in action as a powerful businesswoman; who brings digital marketing, HR, or a cyber security background, that most boards haven’t had previously. Because of the emphasis on having women on boards, the nominating members are looking for new board members who bring genuine added value to the board. Regardless of your background (e.g. if you’re an attorney), if you want to be on a board, you must have financial and business knowledge. Sit on an audit or finance committee and understand the numbers. Going to events such as the 2020 Women on Boards: Get on Board workshop – taking place at The City Club in Los Angeles, on January 24th – can also help you learn the skills you need to stand out from the crowd.
